Spring has come, good the weather not far away, and it’s time to go outside to get some fresh air and sunshine. If you are looking for outdoor activities suitable for everyone family, did you think to visit one of the beautiful butterfly parks in Germany? Here is a selection of our favorite eight exotic places – full of tropical flowers, breathtaking plants, horrible creeps and – of course – winged beauties!
1. Biosphäre, Potsdam, Brandenburg
Experience the jungle all year round in this unique Potsdam experience, Brandenburg, in a tropical landscape filled with more than 20,000 plants, exotic animals, a trail on the treetops and even an hourly storm! In the house for butterflies you can wander among the free-flying insects of different colors and learn about the different stages of life of butterflies.
2. ElbauenPark, Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt
Butterfly House in Elbauenpark in Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, stored at 28 degrees and allows you to meet about 200 different species of butterflies from around the world, as well as fish, birds, reptiles and other insects. Once you’re done with the horrible pauses, the huge park will be great for a family vacation with beautiful manicured gardens, playgrounds, a children’s zoo and a maze. There is even a barbecue area for your own frying food.

3. Alaris Schmetterlingspark, Buchholz, Lower Saxony
Immerse yourself in a tropical world with hundreds of flying butterflies and other creatures at the Alaris Schmetterlingspark in Buchholz (Alaris also has three other butterfly parks in Uslar (Lower Saxony), Wittenberg (Saxony-Anhalt) and Sassnitz (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern)). Join the tour to learn about the stages of butterfly development, and if you’re lucky, you’ll see how a beautiful specimen hatches!
4. Allgäuer Schmetterling Erlebniswelt, Pfronten, Bavaria
Located in Bavaria, this paradise of flying gems offers a warm, humid climate for tropical guests such as satin moth, comet moth, passion fruit and many more. Wander through tropical plants to watch the beautiful butterflies flying, feeding and mating. If you stand still, you may even fall for it!
5. Schmetterlingshaus, Flower Island Mainau, Baden-Württemberg
The second largest butterfly house in Germany is definitely something special. Located on Mainau – a beautiful island in Lake Constance, Baden-Württemberg, known as the “flower island” for its fragrant gardens that bloom year-round – the butterfly house attracts millions of visitors each year. The exotic landscape in the greenhouses is saturated with 120 different free-flying tropical butterflies, some with a wingspan of up to 30 centimeters, as well as other flora and fauna.
6. Garten der Schmetterlinge, Aumühle, Schleswig-Holstein
Butterfly Garden, near Aumula in Schleswig-Holstein, is a greenhouse with an area of 450 square meters, in which the temperature is kept at a pleasant 26 degrees and is filled with more than 1,000 butterflies. Next to the enchanting jungle inside the greenhouse there is a spacious outdoor area with well-distributed gardens and a café for drinks.
7. Butterfly Garden in Sain Castle, Bendorf, Rhineland-Palatinate
Embark on a journey to a tropical paradise filled with palm trees and banana trees, flowing waterfalls and colorful flashes of exotic butterflies around the world! In addition to a room of free-flying butterflies, the Garten der Schmetterlinge at Sain Castle promises a caterpillar house full of little butterfly eggs, hungry caterpillars and cocoons that are about to change. There’s also an insectarium full of tarantulas, snakes and other exotics pets – if you dare to enter! Outside there are several glorious gardens and picnic areas with great views castle.
8. Butterfly House in Maximilianpark, Hamm, North Rhine-Westphalia
The biggest house for butterflies North Rhine-WestphaliaSchmetterlingshaus in Maximilianpark in Hama contains up to 80 different species of butterflies from South and Central America, Africa, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines, which fly freely on an area of 450 square meters, some of them larger than a palm!
