As pandemic-induced remote working helps accelerate changes in the way businesses operate, UK employers in the education sector are now being forced to offer their staff increasingly attractive packages, as new research shows a third of staff feel they have more power now than before the pandemic COVID-19.

Data from Benenden Health’s Future Workforce Report.also found that almost half of working adults in the sector (42%) believe the pandemic has changed their relationship with their employer.

The result of this change is a significant transfer of power from employers to employees, with a third (32%) of education workers feeling they have more power now than before the pandemic, forcing employers to carefully consider what they are able to offer workers among the “Great resignations’ and debates on return-to-work policies.

The survey also found that workers in this industry are now increasingly willing to spread their future job searches across wider geographical areas in search of work that offers the flexibility, satisfaction and benefits they desire.

While the average worker in the education sector today lives 13 miles from their workplace, workers have indicated that they are now willing to take a job an average of 39 miles from home.

With more than 3,000 workers in 60 UK companies now trialling a four-day working week, a three-day weekend (51%) has emerged as the number one thing education workers would like to see in the next five years, while a fifth (18%) now believe that offering comprehensive health care is a necessity.

Benenden Health is encouraging employers in this sector to consider their approach to recruiting and retaining talent as we move away from the pandemic with these new dynamics.

Naomi Thompson, Head of OD at Benenden Health, said: “The massive redundancies and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on traditional work structures will be historic, and our research shows an extremely significant shift in the balance of power between employers and employees. and with the average worker telling us they plan to leave their current job in the next five years, businesses now face a crucial crossroads.

“While employees have an increasingly open mind about where they work and what their role is, employers still need to take steps to be an attractive proposition to the talent pool.

“The world of work has undoubtedly changed forever and it has never been more important for businesses to consult with their employees and ensure they provide the tools and support they need to create a healthy workplace where people want to work in increasingly competitive jobs. market”.
