SAO PAULO (AP) – Tropical Cyclone Jakecan has hit southern Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul, and authorities said about 182,000 homes were left without electricity on Tuesday night.

The local utility CEEE Equatorial reported on its social media channels that all its employees had repaired the damage from the storm, which blew up trees and other major facilities on the power line. The company said it could not predict when the service would be fully restored.

Authorities have previously canceled football matches, closed public buildings early, suspended classes at schools and universities, and stepped up services for the homeless for fear of serious disruptions caused by winds of more than 60 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour).

Weather experts say the tropical cyclone will cover the region by early Thursday.
