NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. News & World Report has changed its ranking of Columbia University in its 2022 Best Colleges edition, saying in a statement that the Ivy League institution was unable to substantiate certain 2021 data it previously provided, including student-teacher ratio and number of classes.

The decision to rescind the school’s ranking as the nation’s No. 2 university for the Class of 2022 comes about a week after Columbia announced it would not submit data for the Class of 2023 top colleges after a math professor recently raised questions about the accuracy of past rankings. materials.

The 2022 edition was first published in September 2021. Prospective students often rely on US News & World Report rankings to determine where they should apply to college.

Columbia University Provost Mary Boyce said in a statement released June 30 that the school is reviewing its data collection and reporting process in light of the professor’s concerns and may not complete the work in time for the July 1 U.S. News and World Report deadline for a better year of 2023. College Edition.

“Columbia has long maintained what we believed to be a thorough process for collecting and reporting institutional data, but we are now carefully reviewing our processes in light of the issues raised,” she wrote. “The current review is a matter of good faith. We’re not going to take shortcuts to get it right.”

U.S. News said it contacted Columbia officials in March after learning there were doubts about the accuracy of the university’s representation and asked it to substantiate some of the information.

“To date, Columbia has not been able to provide satisfactory responses to the information requested by US News,” the publisher said in a statement Thursday.

As such, the publisher said, it has removed the school’s numerical ranking in various lists, including the 2022 National Universities, 2022 Best Quality Schools and 2022 Top Performers for Social Mobility.

Columbia will remain ranked in other fields, which relied on rankings of top officials from other universities and departments and did not include Columbia’s data.

Unrated status will appear on Columbia’s profile page on USNews.com.
