Colorado Sun has opened applications for a 2022 journalism workshop for 25 middle and high school students across Colorado. The program will be held July 18-22 in the Zoom program.
The Sun introduced a summer camp last year, opening students to fundamental journalism skills – including reporting, writing, requesting public records, photojournalism and social media management – and teaching them the importance of media ethics. Each student was paired with a professional journalist who mentored them for a week.
Students selected to participate in the free workshop will gain a similar set of skills in interactive workshops taught by professional reporters, editors, photojournalists and other members of the media industry to help them understand how to start honing their craft as a journalist.
Participants will learn about different ways and options to make a career as a journalist, as well as how to transfer good writing, art, business and digital skills to good news. They will hear from journalists working in newspapers, online news outlets, as well as on radio and television stations. They will create fascinating stories, learn to find sources and ask the right questions, learn to photograph objects, learn to use social media to find story ideas and share their work, and learn to take care of their mental health as a journalist – and more.
This year, the seminar “Ascension and Shine” is open to 25 students who meet the following criteria:
- Live in Colorado
- The fall will be in high school or high school
- He is interested in journalism
No previous experience in student journalism is required. Colorado Sun welcomes students of all levels of experience, including those who have never thought about a career in journalism and are interested in how they can transfer skills and interests to a career in media.
Applicants from underrepresented and diverse communities are encouraged to apply. Colorado Sun will help students who may have difficulty accessing a computer or device and a reliable Internet connection.
The app is there until 6 pm on May 31. Participants will be notified no later than June 17.
