Book explores how religious education can help pupils learn more about diversity – FE News

The teaching of religious studies and the positive impact the subject can have on people and society is examined in a book written by a University of Chester academic.

Dr. James Holt, Associate Professor of Religious Educationasked to update their book Religious Education in the Secondary School: An Introduction to Teaching, Learning, and World Religions (Routledge), which is already used by teachers working in secondary education.

The purpose of the updated edition is to provide a comprehensive and straightforward introduction to teaching RE effectively in the secondary school classroom. It shows how a subject can be taught in a way that affects the world around us, engages students and prepares them to become individuals who value and respect diversity.

This new edition of the book includes a new chapter on religion and worldview and emphasizes developing an understanding of the importance and different ways of meeting students’ learning needs.

Dr James Holt is an experienced lecturer, teacher and examiner.

He said: I am very glad that a second edition was needed Religious education in high school, a book used in PGCE courses across the country. The updates reflect the changing landscape of religious education in schools since the book was first published in 2015. Over the years the RE Commission has published its results, assessment in schools has changed, new exam requirements have been developed and we are in the midst of a paradigm shift towards religious- worldview approach.
