Extron NAV Pro AV through IP expands the scope of surgical grand rounds at UNC Chapel Hill Medical School

Anaheim, CA (May 17, 2022) – To support the goals of knowledge sharing, the heads of the Department of Surgery of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine turned to UNC AV engineer Christopher Ferrer to design and install modern AV systems as part of a comprehensive renovation of the fourth floor of the building. The Burnett Womack building on the Chapel Hill campus. Central to the project was the establishment of a 140-seat surgical education center to connect UNC surgeons with their counterparts during weekly surgical rounds. The project also included new office space and conference rooms with AV support. Ferrer turned to professional integrator Clark Powell for AV design and installation services. “The Surgical Education Center, its video wall, and the NAV AVoIP network, which connects all the meeting rooms on the fourth floor together, exceeded everyone’s expectations,” says Christopher Ferrer, CTS-D / CTS-I, AV engineer at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. “We would not have been able to do this without the help of a company that was willing to accept our design goals, train us and support us, as Extron has done throughout this project.”

Extron NAV Pro AV encoders and decoders via IP, as well as the NAVigator system manager connect each AV source to each AV destination via the UNC corporate data network. The NAV system provides ultra-low latency video and audio transmission, and allows easy and economical scaling, making it exceptionally qualified for the UNC application for real-time video transportation and telemetry of vital patient indicators among a large and growing set of endpoints. The Surgical Education Center’s 24 x 5-foot main video wall receives 4K video from the Extron Quantum Ultra 305 video wall processor. ethers, all with clear details. For remote visitors, presentations at the Education Center are broadcast live, stored and archived on the Panopto lecture recording platform using the Extron SMP 351 streaming media processor. The new conference rooms use DTP switches containing built-in audio amplifiers to operate. conference rooms or as crowded rooms for an educational center. All AV functions are controlled by IPCP Pro control processors and many TouchLink Pro wall and desktop touch panels.
