NEW YORK (AP) — A former White House adviser under President Barack Obama was sentenced Thursday to a year in prison for stealing $218,000 from the national charter school chain he founded.

Seth Andrews, 43, pleaded guilty in January to wire fraud, admitting that in 2019 he transferred money from the Democracy Prep school chain to other bank accounts without authorization.

Democracy Prep, founded in New York in 2005, spread to the US after its methods were credited with raising test scores for economically challenged children in Harlem.

In 2013, Andrew left his position as head of the Democracy Prep network to work for the US Department of Education and as a senior advisor in the White House Office of Educational Technology until 2016.

Prosecutors allege that Andrew used the money to get a better interest rate offered by his bank on a mortgage for a $2 million Manhattan apartment he purchased with his wife.

Andrew admitted in federal court in Manhattan that he tried to make it look like the money he took from the schools came from a civic organization he controlled. He agreed to pay $218,000 in restitution to Democracy Prep.
