French universities can teach more in English

French scholars are protesting against a plan to change some of the country’s education laws to make it easier to teach university courses in English.

Currently, this is only allowed in exceptional circumstances, such as foreign language courses or foreign teacher lessons.

The change is designed to attract more students studying their native English to French universities. This would help French higher education institutions compete for English-speaking English students with colleges in the UK and with German universities that also offer more English courses.

International students find UK universities less attractive as fees have risen and student immigration procedures have become more restrictive.
