The UC Hastings College of Law Board voted to drop “Hastings” from its name and replace it with “San Francisco.”
Letter from David L. Feigman, chancellor and dean, on campus said the reason for rejecting the Hastings name was because Serranus Hastings, the founder for whom the law school was named, was involved “in the massacre of the Yucca people in Round Valley and the of the valley of Eden before his foundation of the college.” In meetings with students, alumni and staff, the law school found strong support for the geographic name change.
The board’s recommendation now heads to the Legislature and Gov. Gavin Newsom for approval.
