At a time when the chaos in our world has reached an extreme level, millions are questioning the meaning of their lives and feeling that there must be something more. For those who are relying on external influences to give their lives a purpose, they find themselves unfulfilled.
But we can all forge a path beyond the chaos to a place of holy peace.
This is available through a pool the practice of mindfulness with a spiritual sense of connection to a higher consciousness. With mindfulness as an ever-present guiding escort, we can explore the divinity of life beyond the surface.
It is not meant to be a religious experience, but rather an experience that connects us to “sacred truths,” or universal principles and divine laws that each person can live with when they choose to be present in the mystery of life.
For example, Evelyn Underhill, known for her many works on religion and spiritual practice, describes a mystical experience she had:
“The first thing I saw was sublime and indescribable beauty in the most wretched places. I can still remember walking down the main road of Notting Hill and looking at the scenery (which was absolutely despicable) with joy and wonder. Even the traffic had something universal and sublime. Of course, it does not last – but the taste remains, and from time to time you catch it again. If one perceives it, it is so real that to regard it as false would be an unimaginable absurdity. At the same time, in those moments, one sees the world as “saturated with the invisible”, so there is no temptation to rest in the simple enjoyment of the visible. (Ans Letters of Evelyn Underhill).
Use these stepping stones on your personal journey of awakening to the divinity within and around us.
1. Transcend limiting thoughts and beliefs.
Each of us is worthy and deserve to know the holy truths of life, but first we must strip ourselves of what is false. This includes any type of escapism we can use to cheat ourselves from the purest essence of our soul, including drugs, alcohol, and ego-driven fantasies of our own self-importance. Through gratitude and humility, we can relinquish the self that stands in the way of greater knowledge.
2. Get on the path of divine inspiration.
We must work to tame our busy minds and choose peace within and without. Mindfulness practice is extremely helpful and important in resisting our mind wandering back to the past or forward to the future. Through mindfulness, we awaken to the awareness of the present moment and begin to understand that something divine is stirring within us. We make a conscious decision to be more conscious and allow ourselves to flow with the light of our existence.
3. Discover a sense of heightened awareness.
Being in the present moment raises our state of consciousness. It gives us recognition of who we are and how much we are part of the divinity of the universe. By being fully present with what we are not only looking at, but also seeing, we can immerse ourselves in the experience. This is when we discover a sense of the divine and a sense of oneness.
4. Immerse yourself in the divinity within.
If we can see ourselves as the divine beings that we are, we can experience a sense of transcendence – even just walking down the street, as Underhill did. We are more aware or attuned to how nature moves around us and experience a kind of enjoyment and satisfaction in watching it. The more we find ourselves slipping into state of heightened awareness, the more receptive we are to the divinity around and within us.
Feeling the divinity within leads us to realize that we are part of a collective, a universe, space, unity and supreme consciousness that breathes life into us all.
