Janis Joplin: “Don’t Compromise.”

“Don’t compromise. You are all you have.’ Janis Joplin

What reminded me of this photo and its quote was the photographer’s obituary Jim Marshall.

In the article, he commented: “Some people have said I shouldn’t have posted that picture of her lying on her back with a bottle in her hand, but I will defend it to the death. People said her legs looked too fat.

“But Janis said, “Hey, that’s a great shot, because sometimes that happens. It’s lousy.” …

“You know, I don’t care if Janis liked the picture or not; it was an honest, powerful picture. It so happened that she liked it very much.”

Janis Joplin-Pearl CoverI used a quote from the great Janis Joplin in an article where I pointed out that it is a call to look at how we can limit ourselves.

But she did not follow this advice: she died in 1970 at the age of 27 from a drug overdose (heroin, possibly mixed with alcohol).

Many other talented artists used and abused drugs and alcohol.
