Learn about habitat conservation in these dragonflies

Wondering how to get your kids interested in nature? Blangah Rise Elementary School will help you. Teachers and students have prepared an illustrated book on dragonflies based on the biodiversity around their school.


A family of dragonflies lives in Telok Blangah Hill Park. Due to climate change the water source in dragonflies is drying up. The family leaves in search of a new home. They come to Berlaer Creek and meet new friends who help them adapt to the new environment …

Enthusiastic about caring for the environment, teachers and students at the Blanga Rise Elementary School came together to release a book of short stories for children. Titled Green dragonflies and their swamp friendsthey wanted to use the book to spread information about environmental issues and how we can all play a role in caring for greenery and wildlife around us.

To launch the process, three teachers – Mrs. Jenny Keck (Head of Science), Mr. Samuel Oi (Head of Character and Citizenship Education) and Mr. Muhammad Salim (Subject Head of Student Management) – researched the topics of biodiversity. and climate change and considered how this can be explained to children.

They then developed a main storyline that would inform the rest of the creative process. “We noticed some dragonflies in our school’s Flowering Garden,” says Mrs. Cake, “so we decided that the main characters in the story would be dragonflies.” She added that they also wanted the story to give young readers a better understanding of people’s impact on the natural world and the steps they can take to help the environment.

Attracting students to the lineup

Next, Ms. Aprilin Guo, Head of the Department of English, decided to attract one of her P6 students, Zhi Lin, who showed an interest in creative writing.

Zhi Lin says, “Writing stories was extremely fun and interesting. I have to test my creative thinking and writing skills in the characterization process. I sought advice from my friends, teachers and referred to famous children’s books for inspiration. While writing the story, I learned to endure even the most difficult times, like the dragonfly family in the story. ”

Capture the beauty of nature

Working with the storyline, the art teachers enlivened the characters and the setting of the collection with illustrations. They explored real dragonfly houses and captured them using watercolors and digital vector illustrations.

Art teacher Sharon Lee says: “I hope that the children who read this book will be encouraged to take positive action in the field of environmental protection and live more sustainably as individuals and as a community, through showcasing the beauty of nature and close characters.”

Immersion in the world of dragonflies

In addition to the story, the book contains several photographs of dragonflies included as training maps describing their unique characteristics.

Pictures of dragonfliesDragonfly training cards are included in the book. These are photos of some of the 15 species of dragonflies taken by the school HOD ICT. The cards are accompanied by a brief description of their unique characteristics.

Ms. Teresa Leong, head of the ICT department, added her passion for photography to capture these dragonflies found in parks near the Blanga Rise Primary School and around Singapore.

She contacted NParks to learn more about the characteristics of the various dragonflies. “I hope that thanks to the photos, readers will be able to identify the unique characteristics of dragonflies and better appreciate the biodiversity around them,” she says.

The book also includes a recurring book, “Did You Know?” a segment containing interesting facts, and a vocabulary with additional information that parents can search for together with their children after reading the book.

Dissemination of information on dragonflies and biodiversity

With the release of the book, the student leaders conducted storytelling sessions at MK @ Blangah Rise, Library @ harbourfront and the Singapore Botanic Gardens (during the Biodiversity Festival).

This gave them the opportunity to improve their public speaking and storytelling skills. P5 student Atan says, “I took on the role of Pepper Green (one of the characters in the story). I enjoyed the storytelling process because I was able to use the oral communication skills I learned in class. From this experience, I can confidently express my thoughts.
