Learning Without Tears showcases assessments to guide school readiness® instruction

Washington, DC Demonstration as part of the new decision to eliminate literacy on NAEITS (National Association for Early Childhood Education) Annual Conference, Learning without tears‘famous curriculum for young children, Get a kit for school® (GSS), now includes Assessments for Leadership (AGI), a supplement to the full program that provides greater value and more comprehensive foundational training. This new assessment tool allows teachers to easily assess, track and remediate student performance throughout the school year. With AGI, teachers can easily provide updates and suggestions to families, creating strong connections between school and home, an important element in the success of young learners.

“Learning Without Tears has created a powerful literacy solution based on our success in early childhood education for more than 40 years,” said Terry Nealon, CEO of Learning Without Tears. “Get Set for School is a central component of this literacy experience and is already used in thousands of schools across the country for kindergarten preparation. Expanding the GSS to include assessments in leadership instruction increases the impact a LWT literacy solution can have on the youngest learners. Through a clear, individualized assessment of what students need at this early stage of learning, teachers can create a lifelong learner and love of reading by understanding and meeting students where they are.’

Get Set for School’s comprehensive, award-winning curriculum is divided into six learning areas that seamlessly create better academic outcomes for early childhood students. Students are taught developmentally, learning the most basic skills first and then building on that knowledge as they progress. Multi-sensory activities provide students with opportunities for hands-on learning and play.

Evaluation questions

It’s a complete curriculum to prepare for Kindergarten in a wonderful way, developing the basic learning skills necessary for overall academic success. With the new Assessments to Guide Instruction, teachers can:

  • Identify the skills students need to improve
  • Enable data-driven teacher-led learning improvement
  • Visualize student progress reports and share them with families and administrators
  • Organize student assessments through a digital dashboard
  • Ensure student success over time with digital progress monitoring
  • Refreshing students’ skills with unit prompts

The impact of the pandemic school closures on student progress will be measured and monitored for many years to come. But the National Assessment of Educational Progress reported what many had feared: Student achievement has declined significantly, with lower-performing students experiencing greater declines than some of their peers. “Each student started school this year in a different location,” explains CEO Nilon. “Some students enter preschool with basic learning skills already in place, while other students have yet to develop these building blocks of learning. Many of these young children have never been in a formal learning environment. All of this affects student achievement and progress, and teachers need a way to identify each student’s reading skills.”

Assessing each student’s skills and progress is vital, so teachers have the data to know where each student is in terms of learning. With in-place assessments, teachers can tailor their instruction based on each student’s performance and then monitor and track student progress as they prepare for kindergarten.

Get Set for School helps teachers keep students on track for kindergarten readiness in a simple way: by expanding early learning opportunities. Embedded Professional Development will empower and inspire teachers with real-time and just-in-time learning modules. Digital learning tools, multi-sensory manipulatives, activities, game-based lessons, and many other important educational tools are included in the full version of GSS.

In all elements of the GSS programme, teachers are supported by lessons and other learning opportunities. Students gain access to a hands-on program that engages their minds and gives many children a true love of reading. As a comprehensive school readiness program, Get Set for School meets the standards developed by Head Start and the National Early Childhood Education Association and addresses each subject area throughout the research-based curriculum.

Get Set for School is eligible for federal funding sources.
