CLEVELAND, Tenne (AP) – A private Christian university is considering severely restricting its students’ freedom of speech when it comes to sexuality and gender, from how they behave to what they wear and what they can say in on campus or even online, according to published reports.

In the case of policy approval submitted by faculty and staff at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, this month will not allow students to identify anything other than their biological sex. They will also be prohibited from questioning these restrictions or any other university policy, according to a leaked project leak.

The proposal drew criticism from some former students, including a group of Lee University alumni who posted on Facebook that they were “deeply upset and disappointed by the new policy against LGBTQIA +” under consideration.

University spokeswoman Kendra Mann issued a statement to WTVC-TV and the Chattanooga Times Free Press saying the policy had been developed over the years and was in line with long-held theological beliefs.

“The statement in question does not represent a radical change in Lee’s policy; it is an explanation of the beliefs that underlie the group of politicians who have been active for quite some time, ”the statement said.

The school, which is partly funded by the Church of God, planned to receive additional feedback before publishing its “Statement of Belief on Human Sexuality and Gender” on the eve of the fall semester, the statement said.

The draft policy declares that biological sex is binary and “people do not have the opportunity or the right to choose sex.”

“No member of the Lee University community can publicly identify or behave as a gender that does not match his or her biological gender,” the draft said.

“No member of the Lee University community may personally, in writing, or on the Internet promote or advocate sexual acts, behaviors, or lifestyles that are contrary to Scripture, this expression of belief, or any other university policy,” it said.

Politics also prohibits sex between unmarried heterosexuals.

“I feel this is just their last attempt to at least try to scare students into silence, so much of the policy in the statement is about propaganda and what you can and cannot say on public platforms in support of LGBTQ + students and people.” Said Taylor Lane, a lesbian who left school in December.

Former student Joey St. Hubert told WTVC-TV that the university should not preach love and inclusion and not practice it.

Current student Bethany Robinson also had trouble with the proposal.

“It’s a Christian institution, so I understand their beliefs, but it should still be a place of community and love, no matter what, because we are Christians. And as Christians, we must love one another, ”Robinson said.

Federal law prohibits discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity for educational programs that receive federal funding, but religious schools such as Lee are exempt if those protections interfere with the organization’s religious principles, the U.S. Department of Education said.

Lee’s policy is part of a national trend, according to Caitlin Gabriele-Black, an associate professor of psychology at Salva Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, who researched the experiences of LGBTQ students in evangelical colleges.

“Paying attention to these students, who represent such a small minority of students, is turning to the base of schools like Lee and other evangelical Christian schools,” Gabriele-Black told the newspaper.

The Church of God is a Christian denomination of Pentecostals with thousands of congregations and millions of members around the world.
