Legendary NAIFA leader Peter Brown has died

NAIFA is saddened to announce that Peter C. Brown, former NAIFA National Treasurer and Past President NAIFA-NY, passed away. Peter has been a loyal member of NAIFA since 1965. In a career spanning nearly six decades, he has achieved phenomenal success as an advisor and agency leader, primarily with PRB Capital Managementa firm he co-founded.

He has been a dedicated leader in the industry and at NAIFA. He was a member of the NAIFA Board of Trustees and held various leadership positions in NAIFA-NY, including Chapter President. Peter has been one of the most senior leaders on the NAIFA Executive Committee for many years as the Association’s Treasurer. Working with numerous boards of directors and presidents, his dedication and insight ensured that NAIFA maintained a strong financial foundation.

In 2015, the industry recognized Peter’s contribution to the institution of life insurance along with his outstanding character, dedication and meritorious service presenting him with the John Newton Russell Memorial Awardthe highest honor that can be bestowed upon a living member of the insurance and financial services industry.

“Peter Brown has been an exemplary member and leader of NAIFA. He has always supported our association and was ready to serve his colleagues,” said the NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayo, CAE. “Peter twisted NAIFA blue. Even after he stepped down as NAIFA Treasurer and long ago passed through all leadership positions in the state chapter, Peter has agreed to return and lead NAIFA-NY during the transition period in 2020. Peter is a legend and an icon at NAIFA and in our industry and he will be sorely missed.”

Peter began his career in the insurance industry in 1962 as an agent with Union Central Life Insurance Company in Rochester, New York. He was a part of Rochester Institute of Technology School of Business Work Unit Program as a College Agent. In 1964, he became head of the Rochester agency, where he recruited and mentored many agents who achieved great success. In 1970, Union Central Life Insurance Company sent Peter to New York as a rookie manager of the CB Knight agency, which at the time was one of the largest general life insurance agencies in the country.

In 1984, Peter co-founded Price, Raffel & Browne with Arnold Price and Stuart Raffel. With offices in New York and Los Angeles, the company, now known as PRB Wealth Management, is one of the largest retirement and profit-sharing advisors in the United States.

Peter received the right to Million Dollar Round Table continuously for over four decades, earning MDRT Top of the Table membership. He was the first inductee into the Central Union Hall of Fame. As agency managers, Peter and his partners have won numerous awards, including the President’s Trophy and the Crystal Trophy.

He was a member of the board of trustees of American College and was chairman of the board of the American College Foundation. At The American College, he was instrumental in establishing and funding the Larry R. Pike Chair in Insurance and Investments. In 2010, the American College honored Peter with the President’s Trophy, and in 2012 he was awarded the Huebner Gold Medal along with his good friend and former John Newton Russell Memorial Award winner Alan Press. Peter also served in the village Life happens Board of Trustees.
