The headteacher of an award-winning virtual school, which was set up during the COVID-19 lockdown, has praised colleagues for changing lives as pupils wait for the school’s first-ever GCSE results.

Lawrence Tubb praised the teachers and mentors at Minerva Virtual Academy for making a difference in the lives of students who entered the school – many of whom left mainstream education to do so.

Minerva Virtual Academy (MVA), an independent online school for 12- to 18-year-olds, was founded during the COVID-19 restrictions in November 2020. Since then, enrollment has grown and it has won a number of awards, including including a Digital Impact Award from AMCIS (Admissions, Marketing and Communications in Independent Schools) and Most Innovative Technology Education from online lifestyle guide Muddy Stilettos.

As Minerva’s school year draws to a close, Mr. Tubb singled out colleagues for helping students thrive after two years out of school.

He said: “Community is a school’s greatest asset and we have a fantastic growing community at MVA. Students are of course at the heart of this, but at the end of a long school year we want to celebrate our teachers and mentors for all their wonderful work, care and contribution to society.

“They are all committed to helping our students achieve their best, learn from mistakes and thrive in their school work and life more broadly. Their ability to inspire, stimulate growth and drive transformation. There are so many students whose lives have been changed by the dedication of our teachers and mentors this year – that is no exaggeration.

“I want to say to them, thank you for everything you do—big and small—to accomplish the single goal of helping our MVA students thrive.”

Mr Tubb’s comments were echoed by parents at the school, including one who wrote: “I wanted to write to say a big thank you to you and your team for all you have done to help our family at this difficult time.

“When you welcomed our daughter so warmly into your virtual academy, she was broken, lacking in confidence, feeling trapped with no options. You and your team restored that confidence and gave our family exactly what we needed at that time. We have no doubt how powerful your community and approach is, and can only imagine how many families have been positively impacted by it, just like ours.

“We are forever indebted to you and your team for giving our daughter the experience she needs to gain confidence and flourish in education and community life. Thank you, thank you! We are eternally grateful.”
