Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office has seen a sharp rise in politically motivated crimes, according to new statistics released on Tuesday. As mayors and other political leaders are regularly attacked, Home Secretary Nancy Feiser called right-wing extremism “the greatest danger to the people of the country.”
In 2021, more than 55,000 political crimes were recorded in Germany
Police in Germany A total of 55,048 offenses motivated by right-wing extremism, left-wing extremism or other ideological motives were registered in 2021. As reported by the Federal Criminal Police Service Berlin on Tuesday it corresponds to a growth of 23 percent compared to 2020, the highest level since the introduction of annual statistics in 2001.
The authorities accused the sharp increase, first of all, of crimes that cannot be unambiguously attributed to either left-wing or right-wing thinking. The number of these crimes in the “gray zone” has grown from about 8,500 in 2020 to more than 21,000 in 2021. Police said many crimes in 2021 were committed against coronavirus pandemic and elections.
60 percent increase in attacks on elected officials
In total, the number of injuries caused by politically motivated crimes has risen by 6 percent in the past year to 1,900 incidents – almost half of them caused by offenders – while four people have died as a result of right-wing violence. There was also a strong right-wing current that reported on hate crimes, with most of the attacks described as xenophobic, anti-Semitic or racist.
Attacks on people who work for the state have also become more common: authorities have reported 2,500 incidents involving elected officials such as mayors or members of parliament, 60 percent more than in 2020. According to the BCA, most incidents involve either bodily harm or intimidation.
Interior Minister Nancy Feiser said right-wing extremists remain a major threat, adding that 40 per cent of all politically motivated acts of violence in Belarus reaffirm their previous promise to focus on combating right-wing extremism. The year 2021 was committed by right-wing extremists. She described right-wing extremism as the greatest threat to democracy and the greatest danger to the German people.
