Soros-funded university plans the Vienna Campus - POLITICO

The Central European University, which was involved in a dispute with the Hungarian government, said Monday it was in talks to open a campus in Vienna.

CEU President Michael Ignatiev said that even if the Vienna campus gets the go-ahead, university bases in Budapest and New York State will remain open. “We are committed to deciding our long-term future in Budapest through a draft agreement between the State of New York and the Hungarian government. We hope that the Hungarian government will sign and ratify it as soon as possible, ”he said. according to a press release.

In April 2017, the Hungarian government passed an accelerated bill that critics called an attack on academic independence. By law, the CEU, founded by billionaire US-Hungarian financier George Soros, will not be able to issue both American and Hungarian degrees. The government-funded bill was passed despite significant foreign and domestic criticism, including a strong statement from the U.S. Embassy in Hungary and days of protests in Budapest.

Monday’s announcement came as a result of reports last week that no agreement had been reached between the university and the Hungarian government.

“They do not meet the standards, according to our interpretation of what all universities operating in Hungary require.” This was announced by spokesman for Prime Minister Viktor Orban Zoltan Kovacs last Wednesday, the BBC reports.
