Average student spending on college study materials, including textbooks and digital materials, fell 22 percent during the 2021-22 academic year, according to new data released today by research firm Student Monitor.

According to the research firm, this trend has been going on for decades: student spending per category fell by 44 percent between 2011-12 and 2021-22 academic years.

The average student cost of $ 314 for study materials in the 2021–2022 academic year reflects the average cost of $ 101 for new printed textbooks, $ 69 for used printed textbooks, $ 47 for rented printed textbooks, and $ 97 for e-textbooks.
