The SBS New Writers Competition returns in 2022

We invite all budding writers to prepare their pens for SBS New Writers Competition 2022. It will open on August 16, 2022, and will be judged by acclaimed Australian writers Alisa Pung and Christos Tsiolkas, who are looking for compelling Emergence stories.

From the press release:

SBS is looking to harvest a new crop of talented Australian writers with the return of the SBS Emerging Writers’ Competition in 2022.

An initiative of SBS Voices, the competition aims to discover bold new voices that reflect the diversity of contemporary Australia by inviting emerging writers to share their stories and make their voices heard.

Applications are accepted from August 16 to September 13, 2022. The theme of this year’s competition is “Emergence”. Entrants are encouraged to interpret this theme as they wish, whether it be a story of fully revealing their true self or an event that occurs in the narrative of their life. This year’s entries will be judged by renowned Australian writers Alice Pung and Christos Tsiolkas.

Alice Pang is the author of the bestselling memoirs The Unpolished Gem and Her Father’s Daughter, and her latest novel, One Hundred Days, was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award. Christos Tsiolkas is the author of seven novels, including the award-winning Slap, Damascus and 7 1/2.

Discussing the competition, Christos Tsiolkas urged the participants to have the courage to come forward and tell their unique stories.

“It is courage to give your thoughts, ideas [and] passion for the page, he said. “Someone who enters this contest might be someone who wants to do what I do, which is to write for the rest of their lives. But there may also be people who have something to tell, and it’s important to get this story out there.”

Pung emphasized that she was looking for better storytelling instead of perfect English, sharing that her mother, a migrant from Cambodia, was illiterate.

“Christos and I have one thing in common: we understand what it’s like to live with illiteracy every day. We’re not looking for the most polished pieces.”

She continued: “I read last year’s winning entries and they are all so wonderful. They were so diverse. I’m excited to find the diversity of voices that will emerge this year.”

John Godfrey, head of SBS Unscripted, said the competition played an important role in promoting diversity in Australian storytelling.

“We are delighted that the SBS New Writers’ Competition is returning for its third year. Last year we received more than 4,000 compelling stories from across Australia that explore family, loss, love, culture and country, told with lots of heart and a fresh perspective. We look forward to discovering new talent and supporting diverse voices when the competition returns in 2022.”
