Bad weather hit West Germany

Cities and districts in Germany were weakened by adverse weather that hit the country last weekend. The German weather service (DWD) warned residents about the storm over the weekend, predicting gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour in some places. According to DWD, the storm spawned three tornadoes that swept over parts of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate.

One tornado struck the western city of Paderborn on Friday and, according to German police43 people were injured, 30 of whom had to be delivered hospital. Authorities estimate the tornado caused several million euros in damage to the city, including torn roofs, broken windows and uprooted several trees. The Paderborn fire brigade warned people to stay away from roads: “Please don’t drive to Paderborn on their own without prior consent for assistance. If necessary, further units of the fire brigade will be alerted and called. “

A fire service in the nearby town of Lipstadt said the town was also likely affected by a tornado. No one was injured, but the spire of the local church was blown away by a strong wind. In Lipstadt and Paderborn, schools and children’s centers were closed. The storm reaches the eastern and southern parts of the country

The storm engulfed the rest of the country over the weekend, with dozens of people seriously injured. In the eastern city of Ballenstedt, Saxony-Anhalt, two French citizens died after their paraglider was hit by a strong wind. “It seems they were hit by a gust of wind that caused the paraglider to fall, and the plane crashed into a field from a height of about 40 meters,” police said. 14 people in Bavaria were injured after a wooden hut in which they hid on Lake Brombach collapsed during a storm.

The storm stopped rail traffic across the country. However, Deutsche Bahn has since resumed its work long-distance trainsas well as other regional lines. “We have started work normally,” a company spokesman said on Monday.

The weather is expected to continue this week

The German weather service expects bad weather to persist from Monday afternoon, with heavy rain, strong winds and hail. The probability of strong thunderstorms is especially high in the west and south of North Rhine-Westphalia. In the south DWD put out a low risk tornado. Bad weather is expected on Tuesday night.
