Your end-of-life experience can vary greatly depending on where you live, according to Fr. Policygenius report which ranks the best and worst places to die in the country.

The report for each state and the District of Columbia provides a numerical score based on seven factors, including funeral and service costs, green funerals, palliative care, health care providers, death at home, and testamentary labels.

“I think the main outcome of this project is to get people to think about end-of-life costs,” said Logan Sachon, senior editor-in-chief of Policygenius research. “Because some of them can be mitigated by planning.”

“If you look at the top 10 and the last 10, there aren’t any common things they have in common,” Sachon said. “Each species is unique in its own way.”

Indeed, Vermont, which ranks № 1 for death, was one of the most expensive for funeral expenses, but received the highest score for palliative care, which focused on pain relief, management, and emotional support.

Florida, known for its large number of retirees, ranked last with the fewest Medicare providers per capita and scored low on home deaths and palliative care.
