Bree hates the Faerie and refuses to have anything to do with them, even if it means starving on the street. But when her sister is sold to a sadistic king from the court of the Unseen to pay off a debt, she will do whatever it takes to get her back, including making a deal with the king himself to steal three magical relics from the court of the Good.

Getting unhindered access to the Court of God is easier said than done. Bree’s only choice is to pose as a potential bride for Prince Ronan, and she soon finds herself falling for him. Unwilling to let her heart distract her, she accepts help from a group of invisible losers with their own secret goals. As Bree spends time with their mysterious leader, Finn, she struggles to resist his seductive charms.

Caught between two dangerous courts, Bree must decide who to trust. And with her heart.

This book had Disney tales with a little spice.

I assume the whole vague retelling of the tale was intentional, but I don’t know for sure. First, Cinderella with her evil aunt and stepsisters ran to the ball to meet the prince. Then there was Beauty and the Beast, and at the end, Snow White was sprinkled in. I loved seeing that familiarity, but mixed in its own way. Again, I’m not sure if that was intentional, but I enjoyed it either way.

This book was a feast of mysteries. Because so much was kept from Bree, so much was kept from the reader. Some things were easy to understand or relate to, but there was so much that I couldn’t even understand it all. However, that was part of the appeal for me. This world is complex, and all the characters have bits of truth and partial answers, so it was fun to figure that out.

My biggest problem with this book is the love triangle. (view spoiler)

All in all, I was completely blown away by this book! I loved the twists, the romance, the magic, the secrets, all of it. I immediately bought the second book after finishing this one because I can’t wait any longer.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
