Last Friday I took the day off to take my daughtersChildren’s Museum and Theater of Maine. On the third floor of the museum there is a room where a stop-motion animation studio works. My daughters loved it! That’s the inspiration for this week’s newsletter.

Creating a time-lapse video is a good way for students to bring the short stories they’ve written to life (here’s howGambicame alive). The tools I’ll share below are also great for creating time-lapse video of long processes likechanging leaves in autumnand to create video of processes that are difficult to see without the benefit of video.

Cloud Stop Motion

Cloud Stop Motiononline video editor to create stop motion videos. You can use it without creating an account. The benefits of creating a free Cloud Stop Motion account are the ability to create longer videos and the ability to upload media for use in your video instead of relying on the default options. This is a short videoprovides a demonstration of how to make a video with Cloud Stop Motion.

Animation table

Animation tableis an app for iPad, Android, and Windows (free and premium versions available) for creating short animated videos. In the free version of the program (the version I tried), you can create up to 50 scenes in each of your projects. In each scene, you can include as much or as little as you want to paint on the canvas. There are several different brush and pencil effects that you can use in your drawings. When you’re done drawing all your scenes, click the play button to watch your animation unfold. When you’re happy with your animation, you can export it to YouTube or save it to your device.

iMovie and WeVideo

Using iMovie or WeVideo, you can create stop motion. The difficulty with these options is that you have to load each image and then set the time for each frame over and over again. Despite that WeVideo has a template for paused videosit still takes quite a bit of time compared to using something like Cloud Stop Motion.
