It took years, but Ohio State University finally got the advantage of the U.S. government to allow it to trade the most common word in English.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday granted the university an exclusive right use the brand “THE” for “clothing, namely t-shirts, baseball caps and hats; all of the above is promoted, distributed and sold through channels common to sports and athletics. ” The approval of the patent office took place three years after its initial denied an attempt by Ohio use this word in a trademark, saying it is simply decorative. A year ago the university settled the dispute with fashion designer Mark Jacobs, who petitioned for the exclusive use of the word on luxury clothing.
Ohio prefers to be called Ohio State University.
