Gloucestershire Business School, based at the University of Gloucestershire, has announced the launch of a new Institute for Research in Public Finance in partnership with the UK’s largest wealth management fund, St. James’s Place.

Based at Gloucestershire Business School’s Oxstalls campus, the research institute will specialize in promoting high-quality collaborative personal finance research to improve practice and policy across the sector, as well as providing research-based technical and policy advice to organizations and government.

In February, the University and St James’s Place announced the launch of the UK’s first dedicated MBA in Financial Planning to meet the needs of the evolving financial planning industry.

The Research Institute’s ambitious goals include providing high-quality Masters and PhD qualifications for financial services industry professionals, developing effective collaborative academic and industry research, and conducting a series of industry-wide research seminars.

The research institute will be officially launched during a presentation to invited guests at Gloucestershire Business School on Tuesday 5 July.

Dr Dominic Page, Head of Gloucestershire Business School, said: “We are very proud to be launching our new Community Finance Research Institute, which we are sure will be another successful collaboration with St. James’s Place.

“The research institute presents a fantastic opportunity to bring together the expertise of the university, colleagues undertaking Masters and PhD qualifications and the wider financial planning industry.

“It will provide opportunities to expand knowledge with a focus on a number of key topics in personal finance, including increasing and achieving financial opportunity, addressing financial vulnerability, accumulating and decumulating wealth and closing the industry skills gap.”

Edward Grant, director of professional development at St. James’s Place, said: “There is a clear need for rigorous academic research into finance in society, so we are delighted to extend our partnership with the university to create a dedicated research unit.

“Expanding academic research in this space will help advance our knowledge as a profession and help identify areas for development, ensuring better outcomes for everyone in society.”

The opening of the research institute will include a full program of presentations and discussions with leading academics and industry practitioners exploring the challenges and opportunities in the financial services sector.

The event will discuss a wide range of research topics, including women in finance, customer vulnerability and financial literacy, the financial impact of the conflict in Ukraine and technological advances across the sector.
