Dr Ashish Jha:

Well, that’s certainly not the way I look at it.

As a health care person, I am very clear that the role of government is to make sure that the capabilities that we have developed, the vaccines, the treatments, the diagnostic tests, are widely available to Americans. Our job is also in government to make recommendations.

I’ve made it very clear that testing is a really important way to control spread, as is masking in crowded indoor spaces, especially high transmission areas. So, I think we’ve done everything we can to reduce the transmission of infection, and obviously to prevent serious illness and death.

Clearly, public health has always been a partnership between federal and state and local officials. And the separate policies around mask mandates are policies that local officials make. But on the federal side, we are very, very focused on continuing to fight this virus.
